In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Utsalady Ladies Aid building we are remembering its beginnings and the eight pioneer women who started it all.
Ladies Aid organizations were a part of Lutheran tradition. There were many Ladies Aid societies located in Washington State. The closest church was Lutheran and many of our original members were Norwegian.
The eight founding members were neighbors and friends. They didn't have electricity, telephones or automobiles. Women did not have the right to vote. The first bridge to the mainland was not constructed until July of 1909. They walked or used horses for transportation. Imagine how important these women were to each other.
In 1908, they organized and in 1924, the Utsalady Ladies Aid building was constructed.
