Three years old when his father was killed in Korea, Roy was raised in a household of women - his grandmother (born and raised in Iran), mother (born in Iran and raised in Germany) and younger sister. By the time he graduated from college, he was anxious to get away from Seattle, (where he was born and raised) and to see the world. He accepted employment with the CIA and embarked on a new and very different life. He married Sarah, angering her mother who had prohibited Sarah marrying a non-Jew. He and Sarah are assigned new identities and moved to Germany as CIA operatives. Because of his Iranian background, and knowledge of the German and Farsi languages, he takes many trips to Iran to gather intelligence, is arrested several times and harshly interrogated by the Shah's secret police.
