In recent decades, the relationship between theology and the law during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period has come into the focus. Stefan Thonissen describes these developments and demonstrates how the interplay of theology, philosophy and legal science transformed the law. Thus it becomes comprehensible how the modern concept of rights based on personality, will and freedom could emerge.
