Originally written for Christians living in Asia Minor (Turkey), First Peter is a book of spiritual guidance. Christians who believed in Jesus Christ were being persecuted. While Peter did not reside in Asia Minor, there is debate on where he resided during this time, he knew firsthand the suffering associated with following Jesus. Peter was with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when he was arrested. During Jesus' trial, Peter stood outside the room. There is even a belief that Peter could have been at the cross where Jesus was crucified. Suffering is woven into the fabric of Peter's life. He writes to Christians walking the same road he walks. His unique perspective on suffering allows Peter to encourage those facing fiery testing. Throughout the book, Peter reminds readers that our current circumstances are no match for our future circumstances. Earthly suffering will be erased by the glory we will share with Jesus. Challenging readers to embrace the present with a future-oriented mindset is the recipe for endurance. Our Christian walk is fueled by looking to Jesus as the ultimate example. The pain of suffering is only momentary, but the reward is eternal. Our relationship with God is promoted to the next level through what was meant to harm us.
